Our history
The name Immanuel means “God with us” in Hebrew and reflects the purpose and essence of the hospice: to help people in their most vulnerable phase of life, with compassion and dedication.
Jewish Hospice Immanuel was initiated by Sasja Martel and general practitioner Ruben van Coevorden, driven by the desire to create a place where terminally ill people—Jewish and non-Jewish—feel safe and receive optimal care during their final stages of life. From the outset, the hospice has paid special attention to survivors of World War II and other traumatized people who have little or no family. This has made it a unique initiative in Europe, combining the Jewish tradition of care and compassion with professional palliative care.
Jewish Hospice Immanuel opened on May 15, 2007. The building, designed by Israeli architect Boaz Brown, reflects the hospice's vision: a warm, welcoming and safe environment filled with light. The construction was made possible by various partners and donors. Since June 2013, the building has been owned by the Friends of Jewish Hospice Immanuel Foundation.
